Landscape Photography
Jamie McGregor Smith’s interest in landscape began as a child, in the redundant Cornish mines and quarries that interspersed family holidays – architectural signals of human history, left behind on the land. Studying photography at Staffordshire University, he was inspired by the American New Topographics movement and began his own documentary record of the defunct pottery industry of the British Midlands.
Beauty in the banal, and the industrial landscape in flux, have run through his work ever since – from the collapse of the motor industry in Detroit and the steel and oil industries of Middlesbrough to the abandoned Athens Olympic venues and Białowieża, one of Europe’s last primeval forests. This gallery brings together landscapes from Britain, Europe, Turkey and the United States: Sellafield in Cumbria, the Essex coast at Clacton-on-Sea, the Brooklyn waterfront, Los Angeles, the valleys of Cappadocia and snowbound Alpine villages.
